I have a new friend in the Anglican Mission. His name is Barclay Mayo. He is helping me get up to speed on contemporary uses of ancient liturgy. Below is a simple commissioning litany he uses in his church. I think it captures well the vibe and focus of 3iE Groups.

Thanks Barclay!

Wherever you call us, Lord, our God,

we want to be ready and willing to go.

Whenever you need us, Lord, our God

we want to be available and attentive.

Whoever turns out to be our neighbour in need,

we want to be happy to serve, without exceptions.

Live within us, Lord our God

So that we notice, with your discernment,

respond with your compassion,

and speak with your integrity.

In our lives and in our world,

let your kingdom come.

Grant us a vision, Lord,

To reach out beyond ourselves

To share our lives with others

To stretch our capabilities

To increase our sense of purpose

To be aware of where we can help

To be sensitive to your Presence

To give heed to your constant call.

Amen.

The final line; “to give heed to your constant call” really hit me as the most compelling. He is calling me at every moment of the day. Being a friend of Jesus matters in every situation. Frank Laubach wrote a little booklet about being aware of God at all times. (A Game with Minutes). I think I’ll dust that off and practice that discipline for awhile! Thanks for sharing. There is a saying, “What’s old is new”. Maybe “what’s ancient is relevant”.

  2. Mara, I’ve been incorporating some prayer practices into my life to help me pay attention to God’s voice throughout the day and like you, I find what Jesus has to say to in the midst of the daily rhythms and routines of my life matters. That booklet sounds interesting. I wonder if it’s still in print?

I got it on the internet several years back. It was an oldie, marked 25 cents in pencil in the corner! Don’t know if it could be back in print. I have seen bits of it in a “newer” edition of Practicing the Presence of God, by Brother Laurence. (They blended the two works together.) Blessings
